How did we go from living in the same town we grew up in, staying in the same house for almost a decade, to traveling full time in an RV?!

It all started 3 years ago, when we rented a motorhome on Outdoorsy (side note: save $50 on your rental with our referral link!). We took an epic road trip to Yellowstone from Washington state.

Saw things, did things, felt things…

I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels more enlightened/self-aware while on vacation. It became apparent that as a family we were our happiest while on the road, experiencing new things and making family memories. Before we returned home, we started to brainstorm ways to travel more frequently.

Thanks to social media and the good ole internet, we discovered that there are lots of people who live full time in RVs and take their home with them as they travel. And not just retirees, but people of all ages with children and pets (and all the “accessories” that come with each).

We started visiting RV dealerships and walking around to see which models and layouts we liked and could see our family of five living in. It’s one thing to vacation for a week or two; it’s a whole other thing to have an RV as your home base with all the contents of your daily activities.

We simultaneously thought about the practical aspects, including finances. My spouse researched remote jobs, but we came to the conclusion that for the lifestyle we envisioned it would be best if I found work as a travel nurse. To do this, I transitioned from ICU to PACU (mainly because I was burnt out on ICU nursing and couldn’t imagine doing it for much longer). Most travel nurse jobs require at least 2 years in a specialty so our timing was pretty perfect.

One year in, we decided to purchase a tow vehicle as our first big leap. This doubled as my spouse’s work truck for pulling landscape and dump trailers. We knew that we were planning to buy a larger, heavier 5th wheel so we agreed that a diesel dually would pull whatever rig we ended up with. Even with the birth of our 3rd child, we were still devoted to following this path.

About a year later, we found a lightly used RV that checked all the boxes so we pulled the trigger. Within a few months, we sold & donated most of our belongings and were moved into the RV full time.

We stayed locally at an RV park for 6 months to work out the kinks (and for me to work up the courage to take my first travel nurse contract). We finally launched 6 months ago and the rest is history…
